DC Rumors: Ben Affleck to Direct ‘The Batman’; There May be Multiple Human Green Lanterns

By | June 30, 2021

“The Batman” in 2019 and TWO (or more) Green Lanterns in 2020!

We’ve got two huge rumors today concerning Warner Bros. DC Cinematic Universe. With San Diego Comic Con 2015 just around the corner, and with Marvel and several other studios sitting out of this year’s proceedings, one or both of these rumors very well could be officially confirmed next month at the biggest event in geekdom.

First up, Batman himself Ben Affleck is rumored to be directing a solo Batman film, which is said to be called “The Batman.” According to Latino Review, the script would be written by Chris Terrio, who wrote Affleck’s Academy Award-winning “Argo,” as well as co-wrote “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and both “Justice League” films.

The solo Batfleck film is said to be released in November of 2018, meaning it will compete with Marvel’s “Captain Marvel.” If this is true, we will probably have to wait for SDCC for confirmation.

Our second big rumor today is that the upcoming “Green Lantern” reboot, which isn’t coming out until 2020, will star multiple human Green Lanterns. That means we’ll not only see Hal Jordan, but also John Stewart, and/or possibly even Guy Gardner. According to Collider, who broke the news, the film would focus more on the Green Lantern Corps, rather than one particular Green Lantern. The original report doesn’t specify, but if I had to hazard a guess, I would suspect we’ll be seeing Hal Jordan first in “Justice League,” with the solo Green Lantern movie introducing the others.

Latino Review believes that the recent rumors of Chris Pine circling the Steve Trevor role in “Wonder Woman” could be a misdirect and that he’s really up for the Hal Jordan role, which has been rumored for some time. A while back, Common was attached to play John Stewart in George Miller’s cancelled Justice League movie, but he’s been cast in “Suicide Squad” as Tattooed Man, so he’s off the table. Tyrese Gibson, however, has been campaigning heavily to play Stewart, so perhaps he’ll land the role. The word right now is that Warner Bros. is planning on taking full advantage of having all eyes on them at SDCC and will bring the entire Justice League out on stage, so we should be seeing one or more Lanterns soon enough.

Ben Affleck’s Batman will make his debut in next year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and Green Lantern is expected to first appear in 2017’s “Justice League.” And if the above rumors are true, then “The Batman” will hit theaters in 2019, followed by the “Green Lantern” reboot the following year, on June 19, 2020.
